Overview

Beef cattle can be highly profitable — but only if the numbers stack up. Purchase price, daily feed cost, finishing period, slaughter and processing charges, and the yield from individual cuts all combine to determine whether a beef enterprise generates a profit or a loss. The Beef Profitability Calculator brings all of these variables together in one place.

The tool is designed for smallholders and farm businesses finishing one or more cattle per year, whether bought in as store cattle or raised from the herd.

Key Features

The cost side covers purchase price, estimated purchase weight, daily feed cost, finishing period in days, veterinary and medication costs, bedding, slaughter fees, and processing or butchery costs. All inputs carry practical defaults based on current UK market conditions.

Revenue is calculated from a 12-cut breakdown of the carcass, applying a standard 57% dressing percentage from live weight to carcass and 72% packaged yield from carcass to saleable meat. Individual cuts — including topside, rump, sirloin, fillet, brisket, and mince — are priced per kilogram, and the results show total revenue, total cost, and net profit or loss.

Additional metrics include total weight gain, average daily gain, and cost per kilogram of meat produced, giving you a complete picture of efficiency alongside profitability.

Data Sources & Methodology

Dressing percentages are based on AHDB Beef & Lamb KO% data for standard beef breeds finished under UK commercial conditions, using a 57% figure for finished beef cattle. Packaged yield figures are derived from industry butchery yield studies.

Default cut prices reflect current UK retail butcher prices, though these vary significantly by region and outlet. Users selling direct-to-consumer or through farm shops will typically achieve higher prices per kilogram than those used in the default settings.

How to Use

Enter your costs in the left-hand panel. The defaults are a reasonable starting point for a store-to-finish enterprise. Adjust the finishing weight to match your target — most UK beef breeds are finished at 550–650 kg live weight.

Click Calculate to see your cost breakdown, revenue breakdown, and net profit. The cut revenue table shows individual cut weights, price per kilogram, and revenue, so you can see which cuts drive the most value. Adjust individual cut prices to match what you actually receive, or reduce prices if you are selling wholesale rather than retail.
