Cattle Birthing Date Calculator
Overview
Calving is one of the most critical management periods in the cattle year. Having cows calve in a planned window reduces labour requirements, improves calf health through batch-managed colostrum protocols, and allows facilities and equipment to be prepared in advance. The Cattle Birthing Date Calculator gives you the expected calving date from the service or AI date, along with key pre-calving management milestones.
Key Features
Cattle gestation averages 283 days for beef breeds and 279 days for dairy breeds. The calculator allows selection of cattle type (beef or dairy) and returns the expected calving date, a countdown from today, and suggested management dates: when to begin close calving watch (day 270), when to move the cow to the calving pen (day 275), and the expected date to check for calf IgG absorption from colostrum.
A notes panel covers essential calving preparation: colostrum management, calf identification tagging requirements under UK law, and signs of imminent calving.
Data Sources & Methodology
Gestation lengths are based on AHDB Beef & Lamb and AHDB Dairy published breed data. The 283-day figure is an average for beef breeds including Angus, Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental; dairy breeds including Holstein and Friesian average 279 days. Individual variation of plus or minus ten days around the mean is normal.
How to Use
Select beef or dairy cattle type. Enter the service or AI date. The expected calving date and key preparation milestones will appear. For herds with a defined breeding season, calculate from the start of the bulls' introduction date to get the earliest expected calvings, and from the end of the breeding period to get the latest. This gives you your full calving window for planning purposes.
