Overview

Starting a laying flock is straightforward in principle — buy some hens, collect eggs. But the practical questions mount quickly: how many hens do you actually need to reliably produce a set number of eggs per week? How big does the coop need to be? If you want fertilised eggs for hatching, how many roosters should you keep? The Flock Planner answers all three questions in one tool.

Key Features

In eggs-only mode, you enter your target number of eggs per week and select your breed type. The planner calculates the number of hens required to hit that target at typical seasonal production rates, plus a recommended buffer of 15% to account for moulting, broodiness, and individual variation.

Coop space calculations use UK standard welfare guidelines: 0.37 m² of indoor floor space per bird and 1.0 m² of outdoor run space per bird. Both metric and imperial figures are shown.

In breeding mode, the tool adds rooster ratio guidance based on breed type: heavy docile breeds like Orpingtons work best at 6 hens per rooster; standard breeds at 8–10:1; active light breeds like Leghorns at up to 12:1. An over-roostered warning fires if your ratio falls below the minimum recommended for your breed.

Data Sources & Methodology

Egg production rates per breed type are drawn from AHDB Eggs data and published breed standards. Welfare space requirements follow the UK Code of Recommendations for the Welfare of Laying Hens (DEFRA). Rooster ratios are based on poultry husbandry guidance from the British Poultry Council and practical recommendations from the Poultry Club of Great Britain.

How to Use

Select eggs-only or breeding flock mode. Enter your target weekly egg production or the number of hens you are considering. Select your breed type from the four categories. The planner returns the recommended hen count, total birds to buy including buffer, coop dimensions, run size, and (in breeding mode) the ideal number of roosters. Use these figures when planning coop construction or purchasing birds.
