Milk Yield & Dairy Profitability Calculator
Overview
Dairy farming is one of the most capital-intensive agricultural enterprises, and understanding whether your cows will generate a positive return before you invest is essential. The Milk Yield & Dairy Profitability Calculator lets you model annual milk output for six common dairy breeds and calculate whether income from milk sales covers your annual operating costs.
Whether you keep a single house cow, a small herd for cheese-making, or a commercial dairy unit, this tool gives you a clear financial picture based on realistic breed-specific yield data.
Key Features
Breed selection covers the six most common UK dairy breeds: Holstein Friesian (9,500 litres/year), Brown Swiss (7,500 litres/year), Ayrshire (7,000 litres/year), Jersey (5,500 litres/year), British Shorthorn (5,500 litres/year), and Guernsey (5,000 litres/year). Yields reflect mature cows in their second or third lactation under good management conditions.
The calculator produces annual yield figures alongside a break-even milk price, net profit or loss at your entered farm-gate price, and a litres-per-day figure to help you plan collection logistics. A tanker-loads callout puts large volumes in a practical context.
Cost inputs cover feed, vet and medicine, bedding, and fixed overheads, all with sensible defaults that you can adjust to match your situation.
Data Sources & Methodology
Breed yield figures are drawn from AHDB Dairy breed benchmarking data and DairyCo genetic evaluations, reflecting UK commercial herd averages. Jersey and Guernsey yields are lower in volume but higher in butterfat and protein content, which is reflected in the yield assumptions.
The calculator uses a single lactation yield figure rather than modelling individual lactation curves, which keeps the tool straightforward while remaining accurate for annual planning purposes. Users running precision dairy operations may wish to apply breed-specific lactation curve models for more granular analysis.
How to Use
Select your breed from the dropdown. The annual yield will update automatically. Enter the number of cows in your herd, your farm-gate milk price in pence per litre (the UK average is around 44p at the time of writing), and your annual operating costs.
The results panel will show total annual milk yield, gross income, net profit or loss, and the break-even milk price your operation needs to cover costs. If you are producing milk for home use, cheese, or yoghurt rather than selling at farm-gate rates, enter the retail equivalent price to see the true value of your production.
