Pig Feed Calculator
Overview
Feed planning for pigs is essential for both cost control and achieving target slaughter weights on schedule. Pigs are typically fed in phases — weaner feed, grower feed, and finisher feed — each with different protein and energy content matched to the pig's growth stage. The Pig Feed Calculator models feed consumption across all three phases and gives you a total feed budget for the batch.
Key Features
The calculator takes starting weight (weaner weight), target slaughter weight, and the number of pigs as inputs. It models three feeding phases: weaner (7–20 kg), grower (20–50 kg), and finisher (50 kg to slaughter weight). Feed conversion ratios and daily gain targets for each phase produce a realistic week-by-week feed consumption profile.
Outputs include feed per phase, total feed for the batch, estimated days to target weight, and total feed cost if a feed price is entered.
Data Sources & Methodology
Feed conversion ratios and daily gain figures are based on AHDB Pork Roadmap benchmarking data for UK commercial pigs. Feed conversion ratios typically run at around 2.5 kg feed per kilogram of gain for the grower phase, improving slightly in the finisher phase as pigs lay down more fat (which is more energetically efficient than lean tissue). Outdoor and rare breed pigs will typically have higher feed conversion ratios than the defaults.
How to Use
Enter the weaner arrival weight in kilograms, the target slaughter weight, and the number of pigs in the batch. Enter the current feed price per kilogram if you want a cost estimate. The phase-by-phase feed requirements will appear along with total feed and days to target weight. Use the totals to order feed in advance and plan storage capacity.
