Step-by-Step Guide — Alum & Salt (Recommended)

    Flesh the hide: remove all fat and membrane from the skin side

    Mix 30g alum + 65g salt in 1.5L lukewarm water until dissolved

  3. 3

    Submerge hide flesh-side-in and soak 7 days, stirring twice daily

    Remove, drain, and prepare second bath with remaining 30g alum + 65g salt

  5. 5

    Soak a further 7–14 days, stirring daily

  6. 6

    Remove, rinse briefly in clean water, wring gently

  7. 7

    Stretch over a board fur-side-out and allow to dry slowly

  8. 8

    Work the hide while drying (stretch and flex repeatedly) to keep it soft
